What you'll find here

you had a kitchen drawer full of evidence of trying.

The turmeric capsules. Three different brands over two years, each one started with intention. Golden milk in phases. The period where turmeric went into everything. None of it made a noticeable difference to your knees, which continued to be the first thing you were aware of every morning — specifically in the first ten minutes, when the stairs were a considered decision rather than an automatic one.

you weren’t wrong to try turmeric. you were wrong about what was in the supplements you were trying.

Turmeric and curcumin are not interchangeable words, though most supplement labels treat them as if they are. Turmeric is the root. Curcumin is the active compound inside it — the part that the research actually studies, the part that has the anti-inflammatory evidence. Most turmeric supplements deliver a small and poorly absorbed fraction of what the trials use.

She didn’t know this. Nobody had explained it.

What changed, eventually, was not finding a better turmeric supplement. It was finding out that the form of curcumin in the supplement determines almost everything about whether it actually gets into circulation at the doses that do anything.

Standard curcumin extract absorbs so poorly that even with the black pepper enhancement many supplements include, the amount reaching the tissues where inflammation is happening is a fraction of what the studies use. The phytosome form — where curcumin is bound to a phospholipid carrier that mimics the structure of cell membranes — absorbs in a fundamentally different way. The comparison studies show roughly 20-30 times higher absorption than standard extract.

That is not a marketing difference. It is a bioavailability gap that explains a lot of supplement experiences that should have worked and didn’t.

The drawer is emptier now. The morning routine is the same, but the stairs no longer require the same consideration.

The research on why the form matters so much for curcumin and joint pain specifically — and who this is actually likely to help versus who should look at something different — is here: Why the Turmeric Most Women Try Doesn’t Help Much with Joint Pain
